On The Radar: Northumbria Uni Fashion Show

We attended the first of many graduate fashion shows last night, joining a host of VIPs at the fantastic Baltic in Newcastle to see the results of months of hard work by Northumbria University students. Here we bring you the highlights from the show.

Bold, vivid, clashing digital prints were seen in abundance, with swirling kaleidoscope pattern, a theme set to be big news for printed textiles for Autumn Winter 2011/12 as covered in our Kids Lifestyle Trends book.

Shoulder details were also a key theme, and we loved the contrast between highly technical, structured fabrics, sporty elements and embellishment by Victoria Kirby, below.

Mapped Out

We also loved Louise Dickinson’s menswear collection that was impeccably cut and referenced travel and maps, a theme we have developed for Spring Summer 2011 called Voyager for our home interior forecast.

Many congratulations to all the final year students, there were some brilliant collections, and best of luck at Graduate Fashion Week, where we believe you will represent the very best of North East creative talent.

Hate To Say We Told You So: Outdoor Living

We forecast the use of bold clashing colours for interiors and outdoor products as big news back in November 2008. Picnicware and seasonal goods for Summer 2010 are all in store now, so we photographed some of the best ranges on the UK highstreet. Key trends are bold rainbow colours against white grounds, oversized florals,  poly prop wine and champagne glasses, polka dots and irregular stripes that allow for moderate use of clashing bright colours. Cerise pink and turquoise/teal shades are important along with leaf green. For accessories we love intricate laser cut metal lanterns, decorative glass outdoor candleholders, and colourful paper lanterns. Now all we need is the weather!!

Satellite Trend: Casing Point

Interesting article in the Financial Times recently about the latest trend for using luggage as storage, as flagged up in our Spring Summer 11 trend forecast, published September 2009. This is part of a bigger trend for flexible, adaptable home interior solutions for furniture and storage, along with a nostalgic love for travel, as explored on our Spring Summer 2011 trend Voyager.  Here are a couple of pretty cool ideas for recycling suitcases, from bathroom cabinets to cats beds!
